I’ve been interested in this new Suspiria film for a while, not because I’m a fan of the original, in fact I just watched the original a day before I saw this and loved it. The original is a Neon-soaked visual experience, yet also a tight 70’s horror masterpiece similar to Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween. It’s gory, fun, and got a kicking soundtrack. Dario Argento’s original Suspiria is just wonderful, and this movie is as well… but in a completely different way.

Director Luca Guadagnino takes Suspiria in a completely new direction, and I honestly think it’s one of the best remakes of all time, if not the best. This new film expands on so much from the original, yet never feels bloated even at its two and a half hour runtime. This film has a completely different style, and it’s cinematography is honestly gorgeous. With this film and his last film, Call Me By Your Name, Guadagnino not only proves to be one of the most talented filmmakers in Hollywood right now, but one of my favorite directors of all time.

This new film really expands what we can call a remake, because aside from the bare bones plot of the original, the new Suspiria is nothing like its predecessor. Guadagnino’s take is much more focused on its atmosphere and the eerily beautiful art of dance. I don’t want to say much more about this film, since it would be better to go in as blind as possible, I will say though that it’s my favorite film of the year. The last half hour of this film will leave you breathless.

Gorgeous, horrifying, and masterful.
